Modern technology has done it again. Normally, getting fitted for dentures takes several months and many office visits.

Now, thanks to mini dental implants, the entire procedure can be done in just one day.

"It sounds fantastic, and I just can't wait," dental implant recipient Madeline Bambas said.

When's the last time you heard that kind of enthusiasm from a patient awaiting dental work?

Mini-dental implants or MDI's are invoking that kind of reaction. Bambas lost her bottom teeth after a car accident nearly 35 years ago. Eventually she required upper dentures as well. But, as is often the case, her lower dentures started giving her problems causing her to drastically alter how and what she ate.

"Every time I put these on and I chew, and these would go up and down, and my gums would get so sore I couldn't eat, so I quit eating so much," Bambas said.

"There's people that go, that are literally dentally disabled and crippled for years and years and years and they're almost hopeless. They haven't sat down to a really good meal," dentist Dr. Gary Herron said.

Herron of Affordable Dentures in Austin is now helping people like Bambas to regain their smiles and ability to eat what they want by fitting them with mini dental implants -- pieces of metal barely a millimeter wide that allow dentures to fit snugly without slipping. The procedure can be done in a snap.

"Instead of me having to drill into bone first, then place the implant and let it heal for months and months and months, what I can do, is I make a little bitty pilot hole, set the implant in there and turn, it's almost like a wood screw," Herron said.

In less than an hour, Bambas was fit with her MDI's and is ready to tackle a steak dinner for the first time in about 20 years.

"I just can't wait to eat the things I used to," Bambas said.

Bone structure and bone density are the major factors which determine if someone is a candidate for mini-dental implants.

Several dentists offices in Central Texas perform the MDI procedure, however be sure to shop around, because the cost can vary greatly.
